AWARD FOR YOUNG CURATORS 2011

AWARD


Due to the large amount of proposals and to the quality of the projects received, the winner will be announced by the end of June.

PURPOSE OF THE COMPETITION


MARCO, Museo de Arte Contemporánea de Vigo and 49 Nord 6 Est - Frac Lorraine, Metz (Fonds régional d’art contemporain de Lorraine) organize the MARCO/Frac Lorraine Award for Young Exhibition Curators. They offer participants the chance to propose a project focused on an original and personal reflection topic, and the possibility to develop it in the exhibition venues at MARCO (1st floor) and at Frac Lorraine.

The proposal shall be within the field of contemporary artistic creation and is open to any other forms of creation. Works from Frac Lorraine Collection may be included. To visit the Collection: http://collection.fraclorraine.org.

At least two artists shall be included in the proposal. The exhibition may be accompanied or constituted by a program of activities in order to open a new space of reflection on the treated topic.

The winning project will have a maximum budget of 30,000 € for each venue. The exhibition will take place from January to April 2012 at Frac Lorraine (Metz, France) and from June to September 2012 at MARCO (Vigo, Spain).

CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION


All curators born on and after 1971 are eligible to enter the competition. If an entry is a group creation, one person will be chosen from that group to represent it and act as mediator. Curators will not be allowed to participate as artists in the projects. No more than one project per entrant will be accepted. Entries must be previously unpublished and must contemplate the participation of two or more artists.

- A photocopy of ID card or passport 

Art project (10 p. max.)

- Title
- Summary of the exhibition topic and the articulation of the works
- List of the artists included in the exhibition (indicating their nationalities and date of birth)
- In the case of pre-existing works: a list of the medium used and an image of the works
- If produced specifically for this exhibition: a description and main features of the works
- The layout of the exhibition, in accordance with the dimensions of the galleries at MARCO’s first floor the galleries at Frac Lorraine. Request a copy of the floor plan at info@marcovigo.com and coordination@fraclorraine.org.
- A provisional breakdown of the project costs, which will not exceed 30,000 € for each venue, and the shipping costs from one to another, tax included.

BUDGET DRAFT

The budget MUST provide for:

- The expenses incurred by the production of the works and artist’s fees
- The insurance and transport of works and materials
- The costs of journeys and/or hotels of the participating artists
- The costs of installation or fitting out the gallery
- The budget WILL NOT provide for:
- The cost of designing and printing publicity or promotional material for the press
- Technical staff needed for installation
- Audiovisual material
- Accommodation expenses of the curator of the winning project during his/her stay in Metz and in Vigo

Dossiers received after this time will not be accepted.

DELIVERY AND COLLECTION OF ENTRIES

Entries must be exclusively and simultaneously submitted, PDF format to the following email addresses info@marcovigo.com and coordination@fraclorraine.org, subject: “Award for Young Curators.” Dossiers received in only one venue will not be accepted. Projects must be preferably written in English, although Spanish, French or Galician languages are admitted.

JURY

The jury will select the winning project and two finalists in May 2011. The jury’s decision is final. The jury may declare the award void should they consider this necessary. The criteria for evaluating the entries will be based on quality and suitability to the characteristics of the first floor at MARCO and exhibition spaces at Frac Lorraine.

The jury will be composed by:

- Iñaki Martínez Antelo, MARCO Director

The jury’s decision will be made public in May 2011 and all participants will be notified by email.

ACCEPTANCE OF THE AWARD


A period of 10 natural days will be established for the award to be accepted, by written communication. If it is not accepted, the award will pass to the winner of the second place.

FUNCTIONS OF THE CURATOR

The curator of the winning project will sign a contract with the Fundación MARCO and Frac Lorraine, agreeing to comply with the functions derived from curating an exhibition specified therein and referred, among others, to the selection and localization of the works, the design of the exhibition, the supervision of the relations between the artists and the loaners and of the production, the participation in writing press material and, where appropriate, the selection of activities surrounding the exhibition and the editorial direction of a catalogue (writing one text at least).

The curator and the directors of MARCO and Frac Lorraine will take the winning project as a basis so that the definite projects exhibited in Vigo and Metz will be the result of this exchange. Hence, the winning curator will be invited for a residency to Metz and/or Vigo for a minimum period of 1 month between June and September 2011, on a date settled upon availability and in accordance with both institutions.

HONORARIA

The curator of the winning project will receive the sum of 7,000 €, tax included, as an honorarium. It will be paid in three installments: 40% at the moment of signing the exhibition contract, 30% after the exhibition’s opening at Frac Lorraine and 30% after the exhibition’s opening at MARCO.

The Fundación MARCO and Frac Lorraine will not cover travel expenses, as these are considered to be included in the honorarium. In contrast, both institutions will cover the expenses during the stay in Vigo and Metz, respectively.

ACCEPTANCE OF THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Entry into this competition implies the total acceptance of its terms and conditions.

The organizers reserve the right to deal with any situation not foreseen in these Terms and Conditions as it sees fit.
