AN IMAGE OF ONESELF

“Over the last few decades self-representation has emerged as one of the most productive areas of artistic work.  Since the rise of performance at the end of the 1960s, the sudden entrance of gender perspectives and the deployment of feminist theory in the sphere of art, up to the most recent autobiographical turn, self-representation has surfaced as a decisive tool for broaching a whole series of aspects connected to the production of identity, the construction of the individual, the depiction of the body and the exploration and expression of subjectivity.

Yolanda Herranz Pascual (Barakaldo, 1957), Marta María Pérez Bravo (Havana, 1959) and Andrea Costas Lago (Vigo, 1978), are three artists who have delved into these territories from different perspectives. The convergence of their proposals in this exhibition, based on artworks from the MARCO’s Art Collection in Vigo, provides visitors with a view not only of the aforesaid themes revolving around identity, the body, the individual and subjectivity, but also of two fields closely related to self-representation, namely self-portraiture and performance, for which photography, and by extension video, have emerged as the media of choice for their development.

Throughout their careers, these three artists, to a greater or lesser degree, have approached self-portraiture as a place for exploration where the artist’s body, as an expression and self-representation of the artist’s self, appears as a physical territory, both symbolic and social, from which to explore and express a variety of subjectivities, build themselves as individuals, question identities and assignations both individually and collectively, and to ultimately reveal the fluid and ambiguous nature of the subjective inner world. A performative compulsion nourishes and sustains their proposals in this direction, not only as a consequence of their evident sortie into corporeality, of the traces of experience they have accrued, or of the powerful sense of inner life they possess, but also of their ability of encourage the exploration of subjectivity as a channel for transformation.”
