Dates:

Reading Notes,
a project by Anja Isabel Schneider is the winner of the fourth MARCO/FRAC Lorraine Award for Young Curators (2011). The award was established by MARCO (Museo de Arte Contemporánea, Vigo, Spain) and 49 Nord 6 Est – Frac Lorraine (Metz, France) with the aim to create an exhibition in both venues.

The jury, composed of Béatrice Josse, director of FRAC Lorraine, and Iñaki Martínez Antelo, director of MARCO, evaluated 117 proposals on the basis of their quality, viability, and adaptability to the requirements of the exhibition spaces at MARCO and Frac Lorraine. There were 33 submissions received from Spain, 26 from France, a number from Germany (11) and Italy (10), several from the United Kingdom (7), the United States (6), Russia (4), Portugal (2), Canada (2), Belgium (2), Austria (2), and Brazil (2), as well as one from each of the following countries: China, Cuba, the Netherlands, India, Taiwan, Singapore, Poland, Porto Rico, Romania, and South Africa.

Anja Isabel Schneider (born in Reutlingen, Germany, in 1976) is an art critic and independent curator residing in London. She studied art history in the U.S. (UCLA, Brentwood, California), in Germany (Eberhard-Karls-Universität, Tübingen), and in the UK (Courtauld Institute of Art), and is currently completing her MFA in museum curating at the Goldsmiths College, University of London.

Taking as its starting point the writing of the Uruguyan author Felisberto Hernández (1902-1964), the exhibition Reading Notes explores the notion of reading and its different modes, experiences, and frames. It brings together the works of 14 artists in order to foreground the relationship and interaction between the text and the reader, as well as the conditions, the act, and the process of reading that generate meaning.

The exhibition will be on show at FRAC Lorraine from January to April 2012 and at MARCO from June to September 2012.
